On the eastern bank of the Yamuna River, less than a mile upstream from the Taj Mahal, stands a monument that silently rewrote the rules of Mughal architecture. Unlike the colossal forts and sprawling tombs of earlier emperors, the Tomb of I'timād-ud-Daulah is intimate—a white marble jewel box that seems to float within its charbagh garden. Its walls, encrusted with carnelian, jasper, lapis lazuli, onyx, and topaz, catch the morning light with a subtle fire, while the river breeze carries whispers of a Persian amir who rose from exile to become the pillar of an empire.
